Tips How To Ask For Help At Work

Here are the tips that will help you overcome the barriers that are preventing you from asking for help at work. Let’s explore these tips and discuss them in detail.

1. Make a list of things you tried and possible solutions

First and foremost, make a list of things you tried by yourself to manage the challenge and resolve the issue, and include some possible solutions that you tried. Because your coworker or manager will probably help you when they see you’ve at least tried to solve it. It’ll show that you’re not trying to shirk from work; instead, you’ve tried to resolve it. Also, it is possible that one of your solutions will be chosen by a colleague, manager, or supervisor. This tip will show them your problem-solving skills, competence, and maturity.

2.  Choose people carefully who to ask for help and who could help

When you are finding out who to ask for help, be thoughtful about it. You can write down the list of people who could help you so your job will be easier. You need to ask for help from someone who is well-qualified & experienced in that field and can help you with it. Because they’ll be pretty familiar with the challenge and guide you on it. Moreover, it is great to appreciate them for their skills and expertise and help them feel acknowledged. Doing so will foster a healthy work environment.

3. Don’t act like an expert if you’re not

This is a great tip that can help you to avoid this challenging situation. When your manager or boss assigns you a task you’re unfamiliar with, let them know right at that time. Be honest and tell them that either you’ve little or no experience in doing that task, and ask them if there is someone who can help you with that. Also, be professional in your words, tone, and body language. This gesture shows that you’re honest, humble, and always willing to learn more to improve your skills.

4. Ask an experienced coworker

Never hesitate to ask for help from your experienced coworkers. Sometimes, it is better to approach a coworker for help than a boss or manager. Experienced coworkers are older employees, so they are probably aware of the challenges and know how to resolve them. Reach out to them and ask nicely. In addition, tell them that you appreciate their expertise and knowledge, and you know they’re good at this thing, that’s why you approached them to help you. It will show your respectful behavior.

5. Choose the right time or schedule the conversation

It is one of the essential tips when you ask for help at work. Check with the other person when they’ll be available to talk. Don’t ask for help when they are busy or distracted. It is wise to schedule a conversation to speak with your boss or manager. Also, don’t ask for help at the last minute or when they’re rushing out of the door. Set aside the dedicated team when they’re free. However, if you need clarification on the right time, ask them if they’re available and have time to ask. Otherwise, it’ll complicate your work more.

6. Use outside sources

The internet has a lot of meaningful information about almost every field. If you struggle with using some software or tools, it’s best to figure it out by searching on the internet. Also, there are plenty of tutorials and articles that can help you with your task. So, if your coworkers or boss are busy or unavailable, try taking help using the internet. Hopefully, you’ll find the solution to your problem.

7. Be specific and clarify what you want to ask

When you ask for help at work, be specific and focus on the facts. Clearly state what you’re trying to solve and need help with. Don’t be vague. When you’re specific and have clarification, you’ll likely get help. Let them know the status of your work, the problem or question you have, things you tried, how soon you need the answer, and the importance of your work. These things will show the significance of your work and your willingness to solve it soon. That way, they will show seriousness to your task and help you with that.

8. Acknowledge help and remember to say Thank You

Another wonderful tip on how to ask for help at work is to acknowledge the assistance you receive directly. Say “Thank You” to the person in a formal or informal way and show appreciation. It is also good to let your boss know who helped you. You can publicly praise the helper too. This is not just a beautiful and respectful gesture but helps in building strong workplace relationships.

9. Gain credibility by being available to help others

Last but not least, be available to help others. It is a give-and-take relationship. When you’re known for helping others, you gain trust and contribute to teamwork. This way, you’ll be more likely to get help in the future. Besides, if you see your colleague struggling with something or has too much on their plate, offer your help. You’ll likely receive the same thing when you’re in a problem. Also, you will feel less embarrassed to ask for help. These little gestures create a strong impact and result in building a great work environment in the organization where everyone loves to help others and work together to receive better results.
